Course content
The syllabus
Five modules taking you from route review through to scale-up considerations.
01Synthesis of API intermediates and API
- Review the history of the API, its evolution and importance; compare with contemporary available APIs and identify the synthetic techniques involved, with mechanistic studies.
02Route scouting
- Review of various routes of synthesis.
- Assess the advantages and disadvantages of each synthesis.
- Compare and contrast synthetic routes in terms of availability, cost, safety etc., and present the same.
03Reaction science
- Chemoselectivity and regioselectivity.
- Calculation of yields w/w, w/v etc.
- Screening of solvents, temperature, and the role of additives in reactions.
- Understanding reaction mechanisms.
- Preparation of the various intermediates involved.
04Characterisation and purification
- Characterisation of regio-isomers and stereo-isomers by applying various analytical tools such as UV, IR, NMR and mass spectrometry.
- Purification techniques such as distillation, fractional distillation and crystallisation.
05Scale-up and key materials
- Optimisation of experimental procedures and identification of issues during scale-up of synthetic procedures.
- Synthesis of key reagents.
- Identification of key starting materials and their synthesis to improve cost.
